Armenia - Pre-expedition Info

Route Info

(NOTE: this is the provisional and approximate route and may change pre-departure and/or during the expedition)

Start of Expedition: STORIES FROM THE SILK ROAD
Estimated Start date:  28 September 2023
Start Location: Istanbul

The northern part of the green optional route is part of the TransCaucasian Trail as are the sections south and east of that. The green is an alternative option to the south via Yerevan whereby I would cover the whole TransCaucasian Trail in either a southerly or northerly direction.
Reaching the southern point, I would transit north to where the green and red trails meet and continue north along the eastern route to Georgia.

Provisional Route Details: ARMENIA

  • There's a possibility that I will incorporate part or all of the TransCaucasian Trail into the routes in  Armenia.
  • The route through Armenia is pretty much a loop from the northwest going southwards and returning to the northeast of the country.
  • Including more of the TransCaucasian Trail to the south to the border with Iran would add a total of approximately another 500km.
    • In the event I do add this on, I will use this opportunity to visit Iran which was a key part of the Silk Road, and then return to this location in Armenia and head north back to Georgia.
    • I'll obviously share the change of route and the details) if and when it happens.
  • Total Country Distance:  556 km - 348 miles
  • Estimated Total Duration:  29 days
    • Including anticipated rest days, visiting sites and talking to/interviewing people for the project.

Main Locations along the Route

  • Bavra (border) - Gyumri - Yerevan - Artashat - Selim Pass - Lake Sevan  - Dilijan - Yenokavan - Odzun - Alaverdi - Haqhtanak
    Border: Tsetili/Red Bridge
