Western Kazakhstan is my first section in this country:
the walk from the Caspian Sea to the Uzbekistan border

In Eastern Kazakstan we enter with public transport and continue east to Almaty.
From Almaty we start walking again to the Kyrgyzstan border near Bishkek.

Provisional Route Details: KAZAKHSTAN

There are two routes in Kazakhstan:
  1. Enter by ferry from Azerbaijan and exit to Uzbekistan
  2. Enter from Uzbekistan
    • By train from the border to Almaty
    • Walk from Almaty to the Ak-Tilek border with Kyrgyzstan
  3. During the journey by train, (covering some historically very important sections of the ancient Silk Road) I will continue to stop and spend time with people and listening to their stories.
  • Total Country Distance:  762 km - 476 miles
    • Route 1 (Kuryk Port to Uzbekistan border): 546 km - 341 miles
    • Route 2 (Almaty to Kyrgyzstan border): 216 km - 135 miles
  • Estimated Total Duration:  39 days (walking)
    • Including anticipated rest days, visiting sites and talking to/interviewing people for the project.
    • Route 1 (Kuryk Port to Uzbekistan border): 28 days
    • Route 2 (Almaty to Kyrgyzstan border): 11 days

Route 1
  • Kuryk Port (border) - Zhanaozen - Sor Tuzbair - Sajotes - Beyneu
    Border: Tejen - crossing into Uzbekistan at Tejen border post

Route 2
  • Train
    • Uzbek border - Shymkent - Taraz - Almaty
  • Walking
    • Almaty - Ak-Tilek
    Border: Ak-Tilek - crossing into Kyrgyzstab at Ak-Tilek border post
