Start of Expedition: STORIES FROM THE SILK ROAD

Estimated Start date:  28 September 2023

Start Location: Istanbul

Leaving southern border with Tajikistan to the border of Uzbekistan via Osh.
Resuming walking again from the north in Almaty (KAZ) and crossing into Kyrgyzstan
via Bishkek and going south to the border with China via Osh again (to link up the walking route).

Provisional Route Details: KYRGYZSTAN

There are two routes in Kyrgyzstan:

1. Enter from Tajikistan and exit to Uzbekistan
2. Enter from Kazakhstan and exit to China

• Total Country Distance:  1,599 km - 1,000 miles
• Route 1 (Tajikistan border to Uzbekistan border): 209 km - 131 miles
• Route 2 (Kazakhstan border to China border): 1,390 km - 869 miles
• Estimated Total Duration:  51 days
• Including anticipated rest days, visiting sites and talking to/interviewing people for the project.
• Route 1 (Turkish border to Armenian border): 11 days
• Route 2 (Armenian border to Azerbaijan border): 71 days

Route 1

• Kyzyl-Art Pass (border) - Sary Tash - Osh - Dustlyk

    Border: Dustlyk - crossing into Uzbekistan at Dostyk border post

Route 2

• Ak-Tilek (border) - Bishkek - Issyk-Kul Lake - Karakol - Naryn - Jalala-bad - Osh

    Border: Irkeshtam Pass - crossing into China at Irkeshtam border post
