Start of Expedition: STORIES FROM THE SILK ROAD

Start Location: Istanbul

Walking route from the Kazakhstan border southeast through Uzbekistan to the Tajikistan border.
The 2nd entry into the country from Kyrgyzstan with public transport to Tashkent and the 
Kazakhstan border.


Provisional Route Details: UZBEKISTAN

There are two routes in Uzbekistan:
  1. Enter from Kazakhstan and exit to Tajikistan
  2. Enter from Kyrgyzstan
    • Train and public transport to exit to Kazakstan
  3. Along the second route with trains and/or public transport, I will be visiting some historically  important sections of the ancient Silk Road and of course, I'll continue to stop and spend time with people and listening to their stories.
  • Total Country Distance:  1,313 km - 821 miles
    • Route 1 (Kazakhstan border to Tajikistan border): 1,313 km - 821 miles
    • Route 2 (Kyrgyzstan border to Kazakhstan border): Train and public transport only
  • Estimated Total Duration:  68 days (walking)
    • Including anticipated rest days, visiting sites and talking to/interviewing people for the project.
    • Route 1 (Kazakhstan border to Tajikistan border): 68 days
    • Route 2 (Kyrgyzstan border to Kazakhstan border): Train and public transport only

Main Locations along the Route 

Route 1
  • Tejen (border) - Kungrad - Nukus - Khiva - Bukhara - Kamana - Samarkand - Jartepa 
    Border: Jartepa-Sarazm - crossing into Tajikistan at Jartepa-Sarazm border post

Route 2 (Train and Public Transport)
  • Dostyk (border) - Andijon - Margilon - Rishton - Kokand - Tashkent 
    Border: Gisht Kuprik - crossing into Kazakhstan at Zhibek Zholi border post
